Health
High noise
Noise from saws, jackhammers, compressors, and equipment that causes permanent hearing loss over time. 29 CFR 1926.52 limits exposure to 90 dBA averaged over 8 hours, and 1926.101 requires hearing protection when noise cannot be brought below that limit.
Where it shows up
- Concrete saws and chop saws
- Jackhammers and chipping guns
- Powder-actuated tools
- Working next to running equipment and generators
Controls, most effective first
Work down the list. Rely on PPE only for the risk the controls above it cannot remove.
| Level | Control |
|---|---|
| Engineering | Quieter tools and equipment |
| Move generators and compressors away from crews, or shield them | |
| Administrative | Rotate workers on the loudest tasks |
| Mark areas where hearing protection is required | |
| PPE | Earplugs or earmuffs worn correctly |
